My name is Andrea Gates-Newberry and I am half of Ukusa Bull Terriers with my husband, Gary. I grew up in a family that showed and bred champion Dachshunds in America. At eight years old, my mum let me choose a bitch of my own from our litter. I trained and showed my bitch and made her into a champion as a junior handler. That early start made me very interested in the breeding and showing side of dogs. As I got older, I started judging horses being interested specifically in conformation and movement.
When I had the opportunity to own, breed and show my own dogs, I decided that my heart was with the Bull Terrier. I began showing in America eventually meeting my husband at Silverwood (North America’s premiere Bull Terrier show) and soon thereafter moved to England and together became Ukusa. We’ve been fortunate to have had some successes in our kennel. Our proudest accomplishments: winning the Regent Trophy with our homebred bitch, being runner-up in the Ormandy Dog Jugs and representing the UK five times with a homebred BT in a winning team in the Netherlands Country Competition! We are also proud of our many puppies, as well as puppies out of our stud dogs, that have gone on to grow into lovely bull terriers with friends and fellow breeders to become Champions in the UK and other countries!
Gary and I compile and create The Bull Terrier Yearbookwhich is in its fifteen edition to date. The Yearbookhas been well received, being in over 35 countries around the world. Also, I hold the position of Chairman with the South Eastern Counties Bull Terrier Club having also worked as the Secretary, Show Manager/Secretary and editor over the past 15 years before taking over my present post. I have recently taken over the position of Treasurer on the Southern Miniature Bull Terrier Club.
In addition to Bull Terriers, we also have Miniature Bull Terriers and have had Boerboels. We have been having some success with our miniature bull terriers as well. From our first litter our show girl was top ranked under 2 bitch at the international competition then two years later was top ranked over 2 bitch, and has since become a champion winning several group placements and even winning the terrier group. We are showing her younger sister who has 2 CCs, 2 RCCs, a Puppy Group 4 and following in her sister’s pawprints was top ranked under 2 bitch at the international competition. I began judging Boerboels in 2007, judging the breed in the Ukraine, Holland, Belgium and the UK. We showed our Boerboel dog and bitch gaining top appraisal scores and inclusion on the stud book register for both animals in the UK and attaining the highest appraisal score for our bitch in all of Europe and top ever in the UK. Our bitch went on to win Supreme Champion when we campaigned her in Europe.
I started judging in the UK in 2004. I have had the honour to judge in many countries, thus far: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States with future appointments in Belgium and South Africa. I love both breeds and enjoy the challenge of judging a quality show of bull terriers and miniature bull terriers.
